Preprints or Peer Review? A Student's Honest Guide to Navigating Research Before It's 'Official'

If you have spent any time searching for current research on a fast-moving topic — COVID-19 variants, large language models, CRISPR applications — you have almost certainly encountered a preprint. You may not have known that is what you were looking at. You may have cited it anyway. You may have been told, vaguely, that preprints are unreliable. What they do not carry is the formal certification that peer review is supposed to provide.

What Peer Review Actually Provides (and What It Doesn't)

Peer review has a reputation that occasionally exceeds its actual function. The process involves the journal's editors sending a submitted manuscript to two or three experts in the relevant field, who evaluate the methodology, assess the validity of the conclusions, and recommend acceptance, revision, or rejection. When it works well, this process catches errors, identifies methodological weaknesses, and ensures that published findings meet a baseline standard of rigor.

When it does not work well — and the literature on peer review failure is extensive — it passes flawed studies into print, filters out heterodox but valid findings, and introduces delays long enough to render some research obsolete upon publication. High-profile retractions from peer-reviewed journals, including in outlets as prestigious as The Lancet and Science, have demonstrated that the process is a quality filter, not a quality guarantee.

What Librarians and Faculty Actually Recommend

Ask ten professors whether students should cite preprints and you will receive responses ranging from categorical prohibition to enthusiastic endorsement, with substantial variance based on discipline, professional generation, and personal experience with the peer review system.

Academic librarians — who tend to engage with this question more systematically than individual faculty — generally offer more nuanced guidance. The consensus position, reflected in research literacy instruction at many US universities, can be summarized roughly as follows: preprints are appropriate sources when the research is recent, the authors are credentialed and affiliated with recognized institutions, the methodology is described transparently, and the paper is being used to illustrate a developing area of inquiry rather than to establish a settled empirical claim.

For undergraduate papers, many writing instructors still prefer that students rely on peer-reviewed sources, not because preprints are inherently untrustworthy but because students who lack deep disciplinary knowledge are less equipped to evaluate methodological quality independently. The peer review label functions, in this context, as a proxy for a judgment call that requires expertise to make directly.

For graduate students and researchers, the calculus shifts. A doctoral candidate in computational biology who cannot engage with arXiv preprints is operating with a significant lag relative to the current state of the field. The skill being developed at that level is not deference to credentialing systems but the capacity to evaluate evidence directly.

A Practical Framework for Deciding Which to Use

Rather than treating the preprint/peer-reviewed distinction as binary, consider the following questions when evaluating a source:

How time-sensitive is the topic? In rapidly evolving fields, a preprint from three months ago may be more relevant than a peer-reviewed paper from two years ago. In fields where foundational literature changes slowly, the premium on recency is lower.

Has the preprint received substantial informal scrutiny? High-profile preprints often accumulate significant commentary from the research community — on Twitter/X, in blogs, through post-publication review platforms like PubPeer. A preprint that has been widely discussed and has not attracted serious methodological criticism is, in practical terms, more vetted than a peer-reviewed paper that was accepted with minimal scrutiny.

Is a peer-reviewed version available? Many preprints are eventually published in journals, sometimes with meaningful revisions. If a peer-reviewed version exists, use it — and note whether the conclusions changed significantly between preprint and publication.

What is the preprint being used to support? Citing a preprint to illustrate that researchers are actively investigating a question is different from citing it as definitive evidence for a contested empirical claim. The former is appropriate in many contexts where the latter would not be.

What are the assignment or publication requirements? Some journals and course instructors specify that sources must be peer-reviewed. Regardless of your personal assessment of a preprint's quality, compliance with stated requirements is not optional.

Why Universities Are Slow to Formalize Guidance

The absence of clear institutional guidance on preprint use is not accidental. Universities are collections of disciplines with genuinely different norms, and any policy specific enough to be useful in biology would be inappropriate for history. Faculty governance structures make rapid norm-setting difficult. And there is a generational dimension: faculty who trained before preprint servers became central to their fields may carry assumptions that do not map cleanly onto current practice.
